How We Do Your Assessment

How we do your assessment

Step 1 – Receive resume and date of birth of prospective client.

Step 2 – Determine the age of the prospective client.

Step 3   Check educational attainment and compare it with the the Country Education Profile and Assessment Guidelines for the relevant country to work out whether the qualification is at the required Australian Quality Framework level.

Step 4 – Determine the skilled occupation firstly by reviewing the client’s resume. This is usually straightforward, but for those clients who have a mix of work experience, or who work in an unrelated field to their qualifications, some time can be spent trying to work out which skilled occupation will result in the most points, hence better prospect of success. Only one skilled occupation can be nominated, so ideally it needs to be the one with the widest coverage over the client’s working years.

To match the work experience to a skilled occupation, we consult the Australian Skilled Recognition Information (ASRI) and the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) which provide descriptions for skilled occupations and the level of qualification and experience required for these occupations.

Step 5 – Determine if the occupation is listed in the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) or the Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL). This will then determine the visa application pathway and whether state nomination is required, among other things.

Step 6 – If the applicant is likely to require state nomination, check the state/territory occupation ceilings applicable to the nominated occupation as this will impact on being able to receive an invitation to apply for a visa application.

Step 7 – Check the SkillSelect occupation ceiling applicable to the nominated occupation and any updates on the closing of certain occupations for the programme year as this may impact on the timing for receiving an invitation to apply for a visa.

Step 8 – Check the website of the assessing authority for the skilled occupation to see if there are any special criteria that need to be met to pass the skills assessment, e.g. minimum years of work experience post-qualification or required English language ability.

Step 9 – Calculate the indicative points test score using the credentials on hand. The current SkillSelect pass mark is 60 points. The main criteria that can be assessed at this point are age, number of years of work experience and educational qualifications. Ideally this should add up to at least 50-60 points. Points for state nomination and English language ability (in most cases) are added at a later stage make up the remaining points. Determine if there are any other points that could be gained, e.g. spouse skills.
