Beginning a Life in Australia

The Department of Social Services (DSS) has produced a resource called Beginning a Life in Australia which is a must-read for new migrants.

The book lists the wide range of services Government and community organisations provide to Australian residents. The booklet will give you an introduction to the services and assistance that you can access and where you can go for advice.

It is important to note that some permanent migrants and most temporary visa holders may not be eligible for all the services mentioned in this booklet.

Based on the advice in the booklet (and own personal experience), the following are the four priorities, in no particular order, that we recommend you attend to immediately as part of your settlement in Australia.

1) Register with Medicare

Medicare is the Government subsidised assistance for medical expenses. Joining Medicare will enable you to gain immediate access to health care services and programs, such as free public hospital care, assistance with out-of-pocket expenses for hospitalisation and subsidised medicines.

You cannot apply for Medicare online as you will need to present personally at one of the Medicare offices with your passport and visa grant documents.

2) Register with Centrelink

Medicare and Centrelink offices are usually co-located so you should register with Centrelink as soon as you have registered with Medicare. By registering with Centrelink, you can get help with looking for work, have your overseas skills recognised for employment purposes and access relevant courses.

Note that many of the entitlements such as Family Assistance may be subject to waiting periods before you can receive any payments.

3) Apply for a tax file number

All employees require a tax file number (TFN) to receive income as well as pay taxes in Australia. The TFN is a unique number issued to individuals for Australian taxation purposes.

You can apply for a TFN  in a number of different ways:

4) Open a bank account

If you haven’t already opened an Australian bank account while overseas, you should visit one of the many banks that operate in Australia to open a personal bank account.

It was a few years ago when we emailed Ms Gigi to ask her if she can take our case and be our migration agent.  We got her details from PinoyAu forum which they gave her stunning reviews.

Ms Gigi and her team are very professional and promptly replied to all my queries.  They also reviewed my essay and gave me honest feedback on it.  I believe she is an expert and she knows what she is doing.  Truly highly recommended.

Thank you Reach Out Migration for being an instrument to achieve our dream. God bless!

Thank you Ms Gigi for all your help.

It’s been a long 10-month-smooth journey and I’m glad you guided me throughout.

If I would have continued to transact with an immigration consultancy here in the Philippines, it would not be just a 10-month journey, I would have spent Ph300k plus for the agency fee, I would have a denied visa since they were pushing me to go for Quantity Surveyor (QS) as the nominated occupation which I know most if not all QS applicants failed in this pathway.

And for that, my biggest thanks to you and Pinoy-Australia forum online – this forum which I stumbled upon when searching, pointed me to you!

After deciding to pursue our AU dream, I started scouting for a credible and affordable agent who can help me ease the process of visa application. I came to know Gigi from Pinoyau and sent her a mail. I could not believe that it was a free detailed assessment which really uplifted my soul, despite the fact that I was rejected by an agent who told me I am not eligible to migrate to AU.

To cut the story short, Reach Out Migration was indeed a very supportive team. The professionalism that Gigi has shown comes also with friendly advice that will motivate you to continue your dream. She is always prompt in answering all our queries, day and night.

Now that we have received the Golden Mail, I cannot thank Gigi enough to give my full gratitude on all her hard work from my CDR to visa application.

We highly recommend Gigi among other agents. The best and most economical of all!

A HUGE HUGE thanks to Ms. Gigi. We finally got our PR Visa. My wife and I can’t even begin to tell you what this means. We have been trying to go to AU for so many years and there was a point that we lost hope and wanted to give up our AU dream. And then, you were referred by a family friend to us and everything is history. It was the best decision of our lives when we decided to have you as our agent. In fact, all throughout the journey, with your personal approach, I felt that you’re a family not as an agent.

From the start, you have been so wonderful. Having the patience and professionalism in answering all of my queries, not to mention even staying very late just to get back to me. I certainly could not have gotten through the Engineers Australia skills assessment without your help and guidance. Your compassion is exceptional. You even went the extra mile in encouraging and assisting me with my PTE exams.

You have given us peace of mind and took all the stress out of the process. I can still recall the fantastic excitement when you informed us that we were invited, and just a couple of weeks later, taa da ahh, visa granted! Wooohooo… Can’t get over the feeling til now. In behalf of my whole family, we will be forever grateful. Our deepest gratitude and most heartfelt thanks to you and to your team from Reach out Migration in making our dream come true. Truly you are God sent. All the best!
